God Does Not Call the Qualified, He Qualifies the Called

I recently listened to a Whoa That’s Good Podcast episode from Sadie Robertson, where she talked about her message from Passion Conference 2024, and how she sensed that God had told her to tell the story of the Bible. She talked about how she kept saying to God that she felt like the least likely person to be able do this, and how she kept disqualifying herself to do what God was asking her to do.

I found this thought provoking to hear because I think that this is something that many of us do when we sense that what God is calling us to do is crazy, or out of our comfort zones. We may often disqualify ourselves as Sadie was talking about, or ask God to use someone else that may in our mind be a better fit. But what we need to remember is that when God calls us to something, he will always equip us and prepare us along the way. It is our job to trust and obey God when he is speaking, even when it sounds crazy, or seems scary. If God were to think that he couldn’t use you, he wouldn’t have called you in the first place.

“God does not call the qualified, he qualifies the called.” – Mark Batterson

In the Bible there are many instances of how God uses people that felt unprepared or unqualified for what he was calling them to do. Calling the unqualified has always been one of God’s specialities. One of the most prominent ways in which we see this is when reading about Moses from the book of Exodus. We see him coming up with many excuses as to why he shouldn’t be the one to bring the Israelites out of Egypt. I think that if we were to reflect, you and I would likely find that we are a lot like Moses when it comes to this.

But Moses said to God, “Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the Israelites out of Egypt?”
And God said, “I will be with you. And this will be the sign to you that it is I who have sent you: When you have brought the people out of Egypt, you will worship God on this mountain.”

If God calls you to preaching he will equip you to do it. If God calls you to write a book he will equip you to do it. If If God calls you to do medical care in Africa he will equip you to do it. Whatever God calls you to do, he will equip you to do it.

Now may the God of peace, who through the blood of the eternal covenant brought back from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great Shepherd of the sheep, equip you with everything good for doing his will, and may he work in us what is pleasing to him, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.
